Water Quality

Measuring water quality on a sustained basis is more complicated than air quality because comparisons with other watersheds are not easily accomplished.  Thanks to the work of 3RAIN.org, a regional sourced water projects (SWP), we now publish 3 charts with daily readings from 12 monitors in the Allegheny, Monongahela, Youghiogheny and Ohio Rivers.  A second indicator that tracks the percentage of a recreation season lost annually as measured by monitors in the Pittsburgh rivers provides one measure for evaluating Pittsburgh's water quality.

The temperature in a body of water can be effected by factors such as thermal pollution, dumping and waste.
