Benchmark Regions

There are many definitions of the Pittsburgh region. Wherever possible, PittsburghTODAY will collect and publish data on a 22-county region. This region was created by combining the Morgantown Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) with the 19-county Economic Area designated by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

However, data for the larger 22-county area are not always available. Many sources only report data on the smaller 10-county area of "Southwestern Pennsylvania" or the 7-county Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area.

In addition, another regional initiative, the Power of 32, has an even broader definition of the Pittsburgh region, which includes 32 counties.

More information about each of these regional definitions can be found by clicking on the menu on the left.
